A New Dawn for ICT

Another day has passed, but my world searching for FOSS (Free / Open Source Software) that would serve as an alternative or replacement to proprietary software is just beginning. Downloading FOSS Operating System (OS) and applications (apps) using Ubuntu and Mandriva, testing said OS and apps using Virtualbox makes my work a world of game where winning is a must so that the great ICT divide can be bridged.

While I hold no grudge against proprietary software, I condemn their unfair monopolistic practices, hence, my joining the crusade of the Free Software Movement specially that of the Free Software Foundation ( http://www.fsf.org/) under the leadership of the great Richard Stallman.

Great really is the influence of Mr. Stallman that Linus Torvalds was inspired and created Linux. Linux the FOSS OS played a lot in the United Nations recognizing the importance of FOSS and its role in the development of developing countries and created the International Open Source Network (IOSN). IOSN "promotes the adoption of free/open source software, open standards, and open content for sustainable human development in the Asia-Pacific region."

While my world is not consumed purely in matters concerning research, testing and development as I also have to deal with facility and administrative concerns, one thing's for sure I live, earn, learn, consume and breath anything concerning Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

It is at that time that I chanced upon the almost two-month old FaceBook message of my room mate during our university days who's requesting review of his firm iGlobalSupport.com's website ( http://www.iglobalsupport.com ) .

Upon viewing the firm's site I was pretty impressed by the cool site design but most of all the firm's primary service drive to provide technical support in fixing computer problems remotely or without visiting your home or office.

I must have been too engrossed with the search for the FOSS killer OS or application that would, once and for all, replace the proprietary OS and applications that this concept of fixing the computer problem remotely has almost been new to me.

While of course, once upon a time, I have dreamed of providing service through remote access, I must have been dejected by the fact that our workstations memory and graphics can't handle the requirements for a non-torturous remote support. Also, our unreliable internet connection have added to that burden. By the time, we have upgraded our desktops and workstations, issues concerning privacy and other political concerns surfaced that forced our group to temporarily abandon that dream.

So pardon my being too naive to this kind of business service but it really is a dream revived for me and I'm really amazed that online fixing is their business. Really how time flies and so much have changed since the advent of first personal computer (PC). I am already seeing the products of these change, and there is so much promise that can be achieved, but still the shadows of doubt and darkness that rules mankind since the beginning of time is the equalizer that more than tips the balance to the other side.

I remember the verse in the Holy Book (the Bible) but I can't remember the exact verse or words, about the three great things given by God that will remain and these are "hope, faith and love, but the greatest of these three is love."

I don't know, I may have compared two unrelated things, but to me the relation is very clear I can almost see it right in front of me, standing, staring back.

It must have been too much time with my work, too much time with my world or too much information and trying to do so much with too little time. But one thing is clear, the hands of time is turning, and, while there is looking back, there is no turning back.. A new dawn for ICT just started...
